Review: First Grave on the Right

Title: First Grave on the Right

Author: Darynda Jones

Release Date: February 1st, 2011

Rating: 3/5 Stars

Synopsis from Goodreads: Charley Davidson is a part-time private investigator and full-time grim reaper. Meaning, she sees dead people. Really. And it's her job to convince them to "go into the light." But when these very dead people have died under less than ideal circumstances (like murder), sometimes they want Charley to bring the bad guys to justice. Complicating matters are the intensely hot dreams she's been having about an entity who has been following her all her life...and it turns out he might not be dead after all. In fact, he might be something else entirely. But what does he want with Charley? And why can't she seem to resist him? And what does she have to lose by giving in?

My Review: I have some pretty mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand it was fast paced, kept my attention and had some really interesting aspects. On the other hand I got tired of Charlies attitude and “jokes”, the grim reaper thing could have been done differently and although it was a supernatural mystery and I knew that, the ending just didn’t make sense to me. I think there were a few unnecessary plot points that could have been left out entirely. Perhaps if the book focused more on the mystery instead of on the grim reaper aspect it might have been a better fit for me. There are some good points to the book, such as the mystery itself and the ghosts Charlie interacts with. I also found her family dynamic fascinating. That just wasn’t enough to save the book for me.
